Background of the StudyThere are various ways through which tourism is understood. This is largely dependent on factors such as sociology, psychology, geography and economics. In many instances, tourism is commonly defined as the industry that is made up of component such as restaurants, hotels and transport, which work in collaboration in order to provide services to tourists (Mansfeld Pizam, 2006). Tourism can also be regarded from the point of view of the tourists in terms of the experience of pleasure and relaxation. On the part of the host community, tourism can be understood as the profitable services they provide to tourists or troublesome nuisance within their locality, perhaps in terms of wild animals, which benefit the authority more than it does the host community (Hall et al., 2012).Tourism activities involve people traveling to tourism destination and staying there for leisure, bus iness or any other purpose. These activities can be defined as domestic tourism, where the residents of a particular country travel within their country to enjoy the various tourist attractions that the country provides (Vaduva Thomas, 2015). There is also inbound tourism where the non-residents visit a foreign country to sample the tourism destination in that particular country. There is also the outbound tourism; this one involves the residents of a country going out to visit other tourism destination in those other countries (Upreti et al., 2013).Tourism would also be understood to belong to many small categories, some of which is pleasure tourism that is normally improving the spiritual and physical condition of the tourist. This attracts tourists to places such as spas and wild sceneries where someone can wind out or meditate (Nunkoo Smith, 2014). Business tourism is where people meet at a particular destination in order to attend business meeting or undertake a business tran saction (Hall et al., 2012). Nature tourism, otherwise called ecotourism involves visiting wild destinations to enjoy the wildlife or the natural setting. Cultural tourism involves visiting a tourist destination for the purpose of experiencing the culture, folklore and history of a particular group of people (Vaduva Thomas, 2015)There are also social tourism, which is majorly the travel that involves the company of other people who could be colleagues, family or friends making a bus tour across the country (Upreti et al 2013). Recreation tourism is normally made to help a person escape the normal daily routine of their life and involved going to beach and camping. There are active tourism that involve tourist making and reaching some clear set objectives such as learning a new foreign language or climbing a mountain (Vaduva Thomas, 2015).Sports tourism involves the tourist travelling to a particular destination so that they can experience a particular sport such as a football matc h, Olympic Games or athletics (Upreti et al 2013). On the other hand, the religious tourism is for tourists that visit a particular place for the relevance of their faith; example is being the Muslim visit at Mecca (Nunkoo Smith, 2014). The health and medicine tourism is meant for improve the health. The tourist will therefore visits places such as the resort or a weight-loss camp as they want their health to be improve. Adventure tourism includes people that undertake a challenging adventure, for example trekking through a dangerous rainforest or rock climbing (Vaduva Thomas, 2015). All these variety of tourism activities can either be domestic, inbound or outbound tourism activities. Tourism and hospitality are important for the development of many economies across the globe. The relevance of the industry come in many ways. For one, which is a major importance, tourism is the source of foreign exchange income for many countries. This is because the tourism and hospitality sector provide income to both individual people and the government. The government earns through charges for example service taxes and sales tax. Individual earn through small-scale businesses that sale artifacts and arts to tourists (Vaduva Thomas, 2013). The industry also provides employment opportunity to the skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled manpower in many economies. This is because of the various segments that make the industry work such as transportation that include air travel, tour companies and taxi services; hotel and restaurants that employ waiters, cooks, room service attendants and security personnel (Nunkoo Smith, 2014). Tourism and hospitality are also important for the exchanging of culture; the tourists who come to visit a particular tourism destination carry with them some cultural concepts to the countries where they come from (Mansfeld Pizam, 2006). In turn, the local communities in the tourism destinations are also able to be learning the language, culture, ski ll and art of the tourism who visit (Upreti et al 2013). Tourism is also important in publicizing a nation abroad. Through the art, beauty of its geography, cultural beauty and hospitality a country can end up being known as a tourist attraction (Nunkoo Smith, 2014). The sustainable growth of the tourism and hospitality industry is determined by the good performance of the tourism cycle and many other elements, which interact forming the tourism system (Hall et al., 2012). Each of these element is important and it is also associated with the other elements. Security is one of these critical elements in the tourism and hospitality industry. (Vaduva and Thomas 2013; Upreti et al 2013)According to Hall et al., (2012) the meaning of security is to avoid any anxiety and stress that can result into the disturbing of the peace of mind. Security is therefore established when desirable conditions in the society are provided especially by the police according to the law and this is done with the objective to protect the individuals and the society at large (Vaduva Thomas, 2013). In the context of tourism and hospitality, security can be regarded as the conditions that are provided in order to stop any disturbances to the tourism activities. These conditions are established in order to attract the tourism to visit the available attraction having the sense of safety and security (Hall et al. 112). Every country faces its own security challenges largely depends on the social, geographical, political and economic aspect of the country. These challenges include terrorism, war, crime and border guarding, which affects the growth of tourism and hospitality (Mansfeld Pizam, 2006). For the growing tourism and hospitality security is therefore quite needed. This is because of the working of tourism and hospitality in which people come from their homes to other places and cultures to look for a place for holiday. For good tourism experience, people need safety and security of their bodies and properties. This study therefore, explores the relationship between security, tourism and hospitality. Literature ReviewIn the current world situation there is a direct relationship between tourism and hospitality on the one hand and safety and security on the other hand. However, the interrelationship become even more clearly after the 9/11 attack on United States by the Al Qaida. These incidents are said to result into an imbalance into the tourism system of the world, and this forces the tourism industry that is highly important and fragile as well to operate in highly uncertain and risky circumstances. (Vaduva Thomas, 2015)There a re four main types of security situations that are prevalent in the tourism and hospitality industry. These incidents are categorized according to their effects on the host communities where there are tourist attractions; their effects on the tourists themselves and their effects on the tourism sector (Mansfeld Pizam, 2006). The crime-related security incidents include murder, kidnapping, rape, robbery, piracy and larceny. These incidents may take place in various situation such as those committed by the local residents against the tourist; it could also involve the crimes that the tourists commit against the residents or crimes that are carried out by organized gangs against the tourism enterprises (Upreti et al 2013).On the other hand, terrorism could include local or domestic terrorism; international terrorism and/or cross border terrorism.
